Unforgettable Wine Dinners at Paesanos 1604
Posted by Rob Beaird on Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Paesanos 1604 is well known for their beautiful patio, décor and incredible food, including some of the classic Paesanos dishes. Now, the sensational wine dinners hosted by Paesanos 1604 are getting lots of attention. The main reason is Chef Clark McDaniel’s creative dishes and the wonderful wines he chooses to pair them with. I recently went to a Ridge wine pairing dinner at Paesanos 1604 and liked the Corn Pudding so much I got the recipe.

Where to find best burger & best wine

What’s the best hamburger you’ve ever had? In our ‘neck of the woods’ I have two favorites – the ‘crack’ burger at Zinc, (pictured here) as locals call it because it’s so deliciously addictive, and the green chili cheese burger out at the Alamo Springs Café near Comfort.

Blueberry Basil Vinegar to Excite Your Taste Buds!

The pinot noirs were wonderful, Rex Hill is not to be missed, and we enjoyed an Apolloni Pinot Blanc we discovered at a fabulous Peruvian restaurant in Portland.
Our other fun discovery was the Farmer’s Market in Portland.

New Way to Enjoy Fredericksburg Peaches
Posted by Tanji on Thursday, June 24, 2010
The ripe, sweet and juicy peaches of Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country are legendary. When they arrive each summer unscathed by late frosts or spring hails, many Texans breathe a sign of relief. Telling someone the Hill Country peaches are in is almost as much a part of summertime conversation as talking about the heat. BTW, the Freestones are in now!
Besides the peaches, there’s another hot weather tradition that I anticipate –

Hard hats soon to be chef's hats

Thoughts about the hot, steamy weather and lack of A/C quickly faded into the background replaced by excitement and anticipation—this project is way cool.

The event is at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) at the historic Pearl.
The chefs are given a basket of groceries and have an limited amount of time to prepare an appetizer, an entre and a dessert. While they’re all stressed out in the kitchen, us judges sit back and enjoy some incredible food. The hard part is always choosing the winner.

Wine & Cheese Pairing Class at Central Market
Posted by Tanji on Tuesday, May 04, 2010
Sure red wines work well with red meats and white wines with fish and poultry but ever wonder how to pair wine with cheese? Just because the cheese is white doesn’t mean white wine is the best choice.
Exploring wine and cheese pairings is a lot of fun and well worth your time. Friday at Central Market there’s a class that’s sure to be a ‘delicious romp’. Paula Lambert, owner of the award winning Mozzarella Company, and Susan Auler, co-owner of Fall Creek Vineyards are teaming up to demonstrate some wonderful wine and cheese matches.
Some of the cheesy dishes you’ll be sampling include warm goat cheese with sun-dried tomato coulis, risotto with asparagus and parmigiano and halibut with potato asiago crust just to name few. Paired with some of the award winning wines from Fall Creek, you just know it’s going to be good. Plus, knowing Susan Auler, I know it will be a lot of fun to! $600 Bottle of Beer...Really?
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, March 17, 2010
Really! Sam Adams Utopias beer must be to beer drinkers what Bordeaux is to wine lovers. It’s said to be the strongest beer ever brewed with an alcohol content of about 25% by volume, and it comes with a hefty price tag.
The coveted beer is apparently a bit difficult to find (that ole supply and demand principle at play), so expect to pay about $200 to $600 a bottle depending on where you source it.

The right red wine, red meat & chocolate could be healthy
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, January 03, 2010
What a start to 2010! Actually, in moderation, these ‘luxuries’ can be good for you. Let’s start with red meat—a particular kind of red meat.
Akaushi is a fascinating breed of cattle that originated in Japan. A loophole in a trade agreement resulted in a small herd ending up in Texas. This red meat ranks far higher than the best American beef in healthy fats and lower in unhealthy saturated fats. That’s according to researchers at A&M University. So, if a heavy dose of protein and iron is called for in your diet but you are also watching your cholesterol, check with your doctor about Akaushi. It’s available at Bolner’s Meat Market on S. Flores. It is pricey but in addition to its sited health benefits, it’s also delicious.

Best Bargain Bubblies to ring in New Year

New Restaurant for New Year's Eve
Posted by Tanji on Monday, December 28, 2009
A new restaurant in San Antonio is kicking off the New Year in a big way. Barbaresco’s, the chic, hip, new place on San Pedro is offering a heck of a deal. For $55 (first seating) you’ll enjoy a four course meal complete with a bottle of bubbly.
Choices include a couple of Barbaresco’s signature dishes…the sea scallops that have a delicious orange, butter and peppercorn sauce and the Branzino, a Mediterranean sea bass that steamed with olive oil, shallots and capers. Meat lovers don’t worry…there’s a tenderloin filet offered as well as a Veal Chop. Plus, you’ll enjoy the wine list…Italian lovers, especially!
If you haven’t been to Barbaresco’s you’re not only missing a memorable meal but a sight to behold. The restaurant inside and out is adorned with Venezuelan wood…all imported and carved, polished and placed with perfection.
For some of us ‘seasoned’ San Antonians, this is the location on San Pedro where the popular Maggie’s was.
You can make reservations at info@barbaresco.net or call 210-231-0989.

A huge thank you to all of you for making this such a special year. ‘Gratitude’ and ‘love’ are two words that ring true. It’s amazing isn’t it that one single event in the world’s history has so transformed much of our world. Waiting in the busy grocery line this morning at HEB I thought about how this hectic scene is playing out all over the country and that in other countries all over the world in different time zones families are already celebrating together. That’s a lot of love and a ton of gratitude when you think about it. There’s great energy when so many are filled with love…what a powerful emotion it is. Thank you God for sharing! Mike and I wish you tons of love and lots of smiles and hugs this beautiful time of year. Merry Christmas.

Master Sommelier at Gruene Door

Learning about wine doesn’t have to be intimidating or stuffy – just ask anyone who’s ever been to one of Master Sommelier Guy Stout’s classes.
Guy is hosting a wine pairing dinner at the new Gruene Door restaurant Thursday night, Dec. 17 in Gruene, Tx.
Guy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to wine, and he’s so much fun to learn from.

Big Drop in Wine Prices
Posted by Tanji on Thursday, December 10, 2009
There’s a silver lining to every cloud, and the sluggish economy has slowed down the sales of higher end wines which means lower prices for wine drinkers…a lot lower.
Some higher end wines cost 30% less today than they did at this time last year. And, some of the harder to find wines, are all of a sudden very available in SA.

It's not all about the food
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Sure the Thanksgiving table is the ‘star’ of the holiday, but there’s so much more to the day than the meal. There’s lots to be thankful for. Traveling along on this journey exploring wine and food is such a gift, and I’m thankful to all of you for making it possible. My office is often someone’s kitchen where I’m learning about a fabulous new dish or a cool new technique or it’s the wide open space of a beautiful vineyard where we’re sampling a family’s incredible creation. Who would’ve thought PBS star Lidia Bastianich would actually cook in MY kitchen — she did recently, and you’ll see her segments next week.
Goodtastewithtanji.com’s incredible growth is humbling and the prospects of what lie ahead are mind-boggling…so exciting. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for all of your support and all of His greatness. Stay tuned…lots more fun to come!

Rev it up a notch - raw oysters & the perfect wine

A forgotten red & delightful white

St. Peter, get ready for Miss Ninny
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, October 18, 2009
I was in Rome with a large group of viewers from my website when I got the call from home that ‘Miss Ninny’, Ann Tobin Rowland, had passed on. Tears followed, but in that moment I felt closer to her than I had in years. Miss Ninny was a devout Catholic – she loved her faith and her God. It somehow seemed right that we were honoring her memory in Rome. She was finally at home with so many other saints who I imagine were there with open arms when she arrived…St. Peter might have even stopped by the gates to see Ninny’s grand entrance.
Ninny was a force to be reckoned with. She insisted on style and grace and above all respect…respect for one another.

Nelson & Tracy Wolff back home

They’re back—back where most of us knew them many years ago—in the grocery business. Nelson and Tracy Wolff are an inspirational team. In my reporting days, I enjoyed opportunities to cross paths with Nelson— first in his role as mayor and then as county judge (a post he still holds). Nelson never pulled punches. He always said what was on his mind and was a straight shooter. Tracy, his beautiful bride, has moved mountains for charities not to mention her impressive role at the helm of the renovation of the Bexar Child Abuse and Neglect Court. Now, she’s president of of their new business.

Finding Wine Bargains
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, September 16, 2009
The good news for wine drinkers is that prices have never been more competitive—especially in the higher priced wines. By higher priced, I mean $30 and above. Those wines are moving more slowly, hence, the good old law of supply and demand kicks in.
Watch for sales and compare prices. That Quintessa that sells for $145 at the winery is $115 at HEB.
There are other ways to find value in wine.

Food for Thought for the LONG Weekend

If you’re staying at home this Labor Day weekend, I’ve got a couple of fun food ideas for you. Since we’re not hitting 100 degrees every single day, grilling might be on your mind. So, I wanted to remind you about the incredible fajitas (already seasoned) at Bolner’s Meat Market over on S. Flores. All you do is pop em on the grill – instant heaven. Also, that incredible Akaushi beef is still on sale over there. Joe Doria, their master butcher, shows you how to grill the PERFECT steak on my website at http://goodtastewithtanji.com/markets/bolners
Also, have you ever tried a cold watermelon soup? This is so good! I’ve got a recipe in my recipe section for Francesca’s (the beautiful restaurant at the Westin La Cantera) Golden Watermelon Soup. My 'Z' Lime Pie Comes in 2nd!!
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, August 16, 2009
What a blast I had in Austin Saturday. As on one of the finalists in the Z Tejas recipe contest, I had to go to Z Tejas and prepare the dish for the judges. My recipe was a key lime pie with habanero that I named Tanji’s ‘Z’ Lime Pie (it’s in my recipe section). All entries had to use chiles in the recipe. Z Tejas holds the contest each year to raise money for Lance Armstrong’s Live Strong foundation. Proceeds from each winning dessert sold go to the campaign.

Let's Eat Cake
Posted by Tanji on Saturday, August 08, 2009
When the request came in this week to judge a cake baking contest I immediately said yes. Afterall, it’s cake…it’s bound to be good. Turns out this contest wasn’t about the ‘taste’ of the cake but more the ‘technique’ of decorating the cake. Four of the six custom cake decorators at the HEB Plus at Blanco and 1604 had only an hour and thirty minutes to create their entries. Can you imagine…I’d be a basket case under that kind of pressure.
Well these guys were cool as cucumbers, and choosing a winner out of the bunch was tough. In the end, it may have been the 100+ temps here that swayed the judges.
Rosé Tastings a Must Do

Take me to the South….of France! A glass of rosé wine is a start. That’s where some of the world’s finest rosés come from.
Summertime is perfect for rosé. I’m not talking white zinfandel! Many rosés have a nice crisp acidity that’ s very refreshing in hot weather. Like red wines rosés are made from black grapes but are fermented at a lower temperature and have very little contact with the grape skins.

Today Show in SA Back On
Posted by Tanji on Monday, July 20, 2009
The infamous swine flu scare caused the cancellation of the Today Show’s SA visit earlier, but word is the gig’s back on!
Matt and Meredith won’t be making the trip to the Riverwalk but Hoda Koppe and Kathi Lee will for the July 29th broadcast.
Should be a fun pairing. I’ve met both of these ladies before in my TV news days and look forward to seeing them in SA.
My dear friend Blanca Aldaco with Aldaco’s at Stone Oak will be on the show – actually her famous award winning margaritas will be served on the set at the Arneson River Theatre for the world to see.
Chef extraordinaire Jason Dady will demonstrate his finesse at the grill with treats from his new restaurant “Two Brothers Bar B Q”.
And of course, breakfast tacos! Michael Cortez with Mi Tierra will introduce SA’s breakfast of champions to the Today Show audience.
The details for the show are still being ironed out, so things could still morph a bit. So as they say, stay tuned!!
Texas Wineries vs Napa?
Posted by Tanji on Friday, July 10, 2009
There’s a virtual goldmine right in our own backyard. Texas wineries! Texas Hill Country wineries have reason to be particularly proud.
The Texas Agricultural Department asked me to host their first-ever video podcasts called ‘Go Texan Wine’, and they turned out to be a fascinating learning experience. I was surprised to find out that the wine industry in Texas contributes more than 1.3 Billion dollars to the state’s economy. Statewide, we have more than 170 wineries, and that number keeps climbing.

Becker Wines Win

Their ’08 Viognier and ’08 Syrah each won silver. Their ’07 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – Canada Vineyard took a bronze as did their ’07 Claret and ’08 Sauvignon Blanc.
If you haven’t seen their new tasting room, it’s time for another visit! It’s beautiful.

Weekend Fun for Wine Lovers
Posted by Tanji on Friday, June 26, 2009
Okay get onboard. Texas wines are in the news. Time to visit a local winery and see what all the buzz is about.
The Lone Star International Wine Competition wrapped up with good news for some Hill Country producers.
Grape Creek Vineyards near Fredericksburg won 9 awards…one of those what’s called a ‘Grand Star’.
Another big winner was Driftwood Estates Winery which won 8 awards. Driftwood also knabbed a ‘Grand Star’…a double gold.
One of my all time favorites Becker Vineyards won 7 awards. Becker Vineyards is about an hour’s drive from SA – Grape Creek is about 5 minutes from Becker.
Driftwood Estates is close to an hour’s drive too but a bit further east. It’s not far from Dripping Springs.

Thanks to you, goodtastewithtanji.com has grown nearly 50% just since January! I have tears as I write this – my gratitude to you is immeasurable.

Late Breaking Ideas for Father's Day
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, June 17, 2009
I heard a news report recently that said a lot of men on Father’s Day want to spend the day doing what ‘they’ want to do and that their choice is usually an activity that doesn’t involve the entire family… like golf.
However, if that special father in your life chooses to dine in style on his ‘big’ day, I’ve got some great ideas.
S-T-R-E-T-C-H Your Wine $$
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, June 14, 2009
We’re all looking for ways to spend less and I have good news. I’ve got some really good wine ideas and even a beer drink that will make your $$ last a lot longer.
When we were traveling in the Piedmont region of Italy we not only fell in love with the countryside, we also fell pretty hard for a very refreshing drink made with beer. The owner of the Hotel Castello di Sinio where we stayed showed us how to make it.
In a tall glass full of ice squeeze ½ lime. Then fill about ¾ with beer and top with any lemon/lime soda like Sprite, 7-Up or even the generic brands. One beer now serves two and it’s really good!
Spritzers used to be popular in the ‘80’s – they’re making a come back. The classic is simply half wine, red or white, and half soda served either with or without ice. For a fun spin, freeze some grapes and use them as ice cubes. It makes for a pretty presentation.
Some good inexpensive wines to try for spritzers or on their own – [yellow tail] Shiraz or [yellow tail] Chardonnay – both are about $9.

Warm Apple Cake & Texas Wine
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, June 10, 2009
Every week on Q101.9 FM I do a fun segment called Weekend Preview that lets you know what food and wine events are going on around town…motivation to get your weekend started! It could be a free wine tasting somewhere or maybe a special offer from one of my restaurant partners on my website.
I’ve got the perfect day trip for this weekend. Head to Blanco for their annual Lavender Festival. Just the sound of it feels relaxing, right! There will be all kinds of lavender products…everything from beautiful soaps to delicious honeys. The fun starts Friday afternoon.
While you’re in Blanco there’s a cute little bakery called The Deutsch Apple Bakery that makes delicious apple pecan cakes and muffins. I took the back roads to Austin the other day, and this little gem was well worth the detour.
Elisa McClure, one of the owners of the Ye Kendall Inn in Boerne, told me it was a must-do, and she was right. Of course, Elisa knows her food as she’s a chef & nutritionist. Her favorite Deutsch delicacy is the fried apple pie.
If you want to linger in the Hill Country a little longer, visit a Texas winery. Texas Hills Vineyard is nearby. Head north a little ways on US 281 to Johnson City, turn right onto Ranch Road 2766 and go about a mile. Enjoy your weekend!

Favorite Summer Wines
Posted by Tanji on Monday, June 08, 2009
What’s your favorite wine? It’s a question I’m often asked, and the answer is ’what’s your budget?’
There is a correlation between price and quality, BUT there are also some VERY good wines that don’t cost a lot of money…especially wines that work well with our summer heat.
You’ve probably clicked-on HEB’s banner and watched my friend Ralph ‘the Wine Guy’ talk about ‘Special Selects’. These are always wines less than $15 a bottle, many less than $10, that are a great value.
Some of my other favorite bargain wines, especially this time of year, would be Louis Latour’s Valmoissine Pinot Noir. It’s about $11 a bottle and usually available at Central Market and Costco. It’s a light, fruity pinot noir that goes great with fish, chicken and lamb.
A fun summer wine that’s very EASY on your wallet is New Age from Argentina. At about $9 a bottle it’s the perfect white wine for our hot summer days. It’s slightly effervescent and wonderful served over ice with a slice of lime.
If you want a bit more serious white wine for summer, try Sauvignon Blancs. Some good ones include Geyser Peak, Estancia and Kendall Jackson – all for less than $13.
Another good summer wine – DRY Roses. Banfi’s Centine is about $10. Becker Vineyards makes a good one too. Serve these chilled – they’re perfect with hamburgers and work well alone. Speaking of hamburgers, if you want the secret ingredient Morton’s uses in their delicious burgers, I’ve got the recipe on my website … search ‘Mortons’. The Happy Fork vs the HOA vs Free Speech
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, June 03, 2009
Could the ongoing saga of the fork, the ugly wall and the angry homeowners association get any more bizarre?
Apparently….YES. Well known San Antonio artist Gilbert Duran tells me he’s filed a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union alleging his right to freedom of expression and the rights of the homeowners are being trampled by the Stone Oak Homeowners Association. This gets really interesting – colorful civil rights attorney Gerry Goldstein has been contacted by the restaurant owner/chef to enter the fracas.
Help for Aching Spurs Fans
Posted by Tanji on Monday, June 01, 2009
Evenings aren’t the same this time of year without the Spurs in the playoffs! You and I feel it, and don’t think local restaurants and bars aren’t feeling it too. There is a consolation though. Challenging times call for creative measures, and some of SA’s finest have stepped up.
Hooray for Pizza in SA
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, May 27, 2009
A big congratulations to Dough Pizzeria Napoletana and owners Doug and Lori Horn. Dough is being certified by the Verace Pizza Napoletana in Naples, Italy for the restaurant’s strict guidelines in preparing traditional Pizza Napoletana.
The certification is much like the standards winemakers in various regions must adhere to when they produce wines that follow the guidelines of that region.
To earn the AVPN certification, Dough has to follow strict guidelines in preparing and cooking its pizzas that include the products used, the preparation methods and the type of oven used.
Speaking of oven, when you go to Dough it’s certainly the star of the restaurant. A massive multi-ton fixture that was shipped here from Italy…you can’t miss it. And, you’ll get its importance to the cuisine when you taste the food! Dough’s pizzas are delicious, and I love those special calzones. Also, try the basket oven-roasted olives and the delicious Burrata Caprese.
Don’t overlook the wine list. Doug and Lori do a nice job of finding affordable Italian wines that you won’t see at most restaurants.
Peppe Miele, a Master Pizziaola and Director of the AVPN, will be in San Antonio June 2 to present Dough with its newly earned certification. Congratulazioni!
Diana Barrios Trevino & Martha Stewart
Posted by Tanji on Friday, May 22, 2009
Check out the new Martha Stewart “Living” magazine…
Diana Barrios Trevino and San Antonio ‘Tex-Mex’ food are prominently featured inside. The article takes a brief look at the origins of our favorite ‘local’ food—ever heard of the ‘chili queens’— but mainly focuses on a number of the delicious traditions we all enjoy. It’s a fun read.
Remember when La Margarita first opened in the ‘80s and what a big deal those incredible sizzling fajitas were? Jorge Cortez (his dad Pete Cortez & family own the legendary Mi Tierra) put fajitas on the map, and they’re now served at restaurants all over!
Grab a copy. The story is well told by our own Ron Bechtol. But get ready…you’re gonna be hungry when you finish reading. If you’d like to see Diana prepare one of her signature dishes from Los Barrios and La Hacienda head to http://goodtastewithtanji.com/weekly-gems/2009/01/04/great-start-for-2009/
I’ve also got the recipe for her popular Sangria in my recipe section. Search “Los Barrios” on my home page.
Fire Up the Grill
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Memorial Day weekend and we’re firing up the grill – actually we fire up the grill routinely.
I’m a huge red wine fan, so it’s usually a steak of some sort that goes on our grill. We spice them up with a ‘Montreal’ seasoning that you can get at HEB even though my friend, the GM at Morton’s, swears by salt and pepper on his steaks (his are incredible).
A fun deviation from beef – ‘Diablos’. Have you tried them? Chicken thighs stuffed with jalepenos then wrapped in bacon – I buy mine at Bolner’s on S. Flores – only $1.50 apiece and they’re big! Delicious. Just toss em on the grill.
Are You 'Tweeted' Out Yet?
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, May 17, 2009
Okay, so it’s all the buzz. Tweeting! Frankly, I had to be talked into joining the tweeters. Why in the world would anyone want to spend time all day ‘tweeting’ about what they were doing and furthermore, who cares so much about what others are doing that they would take the time to read those ‘tweets’ as they come in all day? Has someone figured out a way to get more than 24 hours out of a day—who has all this time? It’s exhausting.
My fascination and incomprehension of this new phenomenon led me to invite a well respected friend of mine to lunch. Donna Tuttle is a reporter for the San Antonio Business Journal and obviously, an accomplished Tweeter. Afterall, she signed up for my tweets. ☺

Want to Support Local Farmers...
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, May 10, 2009
It hasn’t even ‘officially’ opened, but the buzz has already started about the Pearl Farmers Market. I got there early, about 7:30 a.m., Saturday morning while the tents were just going up. Fresh cucumbers, zucchinis, lettuces, red and gold beets, strawberries…you name it all being unloaded to sell in the market. Cora Lamar with Oak Hill Farms in Poteet filled me in on all the details while we waited for the 9 a.m. start time. The farmers who sell their goods at the market are all local to our area within about a 150 mile radius. In addition to fresh produce, there’s grass-fed bison, grass-fed goat, grass-fed lamb and grass-fed beef. Also, farm raised tilapia and shrimp. Another treat – Bruce Auden from the fabulous and very well known Biga on the Banks restaurant was there with fresh baked breads.

Not Ready to Panic w/News Media
Posted by Tanji on Monday, April 27, 2009
Okay, so the ‘swine flu’ is out there. I’m not convinced it’s worthy of the media hype that’s out there. Keep in mind the media thrives on bad news (sadly, that’s reality). Don’t get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for my former colleagues, but the business model the ‘media’ works off of is fear based. All I’m saying is look beyond the headlines. No one in this country, so far, has died. From all indications, it looks like just another flu virus.
Diana Barrios and 'San Antonio' on NBC's Today Show

What great news for San Antonio…not to mention Los Barrios and La Hacienda restaurants. Diana Barrios will whip up a couple of her wonderful culinary creations on the Today Show on May 4—segments that millions will see. Yes, TWO segments. Diana tells me the entire 4 hours of the Today Show will be broadcast from San Antonio. What a coup for our city! Obviously, our Convention and Visitors Bureau is due some cudos here too.

"Really Goode Job" Pays $10,000 Per Month
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Talk about a great gig! The Murphy-Goode Winery has a “really Goode Job” opening. The Sonoma County winery wants to find an ‘outgoing, web-savvy, articulate communicator’ to blog, Tweet and talk about Sonoma wines. The dream job pays ten grand a month for a six month contract that includes private housing in beautiful Healdsburg. The application process starts in San Francisco at 11:30 at 120 Market Street near the Hyatt Regency. If you make that, you’ll get a 24 hour headstart on the other applicants. IF you can’t be there, the website for job apps opens April 29. The site is www.areallygoodejob.com. Good luck, and if you’re applying drop me a line….I’d love to hear how it goes.
Wonderful Pasta
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, April 22, 2009
I love making my own pasta, but often don’t take the time. I found a fabulous pasta at Central Market called ‘Rustichella d’Abruzzo’. Italian, of course! My son loves the spaghetti, and I’m hooked on the gnocchetti sardi. The texture, shape and taste are fabulous. I use these in place of spaghetti in ‘My Favorite Spaghetti Casserole’ recipe which is in my recipe section. Enjoy, and let me know how you like it!
Fun for Tamale Fans
Posted by Tanji on Monday, April 20, 2009
A big congratulations to one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants – Rosario’s. The fun, popular eatery won top honors at the Tamalada Throwdown this past weekend at Our Lady of the Lake University. Their delicious creation…a roasted corn poblano and queso fresco tamal. Bin 555 came in second with a wild boar tamal, and third place went to Historic Sunset Station Catering for a pork and granny smith apple with thyme. Congrats everyone!

Drink Wine & Raise Money for a Good Cause

A friend of mine is embarking on an incredible journey – a missionary trip to Rwanda with a charitable organization called True Vineyard Ministries. We are having a fundraiser at Water 2 Wine (Thousand Oaks & 281) on Tuesday, April 14, ALL DAY to help her raise her travel funds.
If you haven’t been to Water 2 Wine, you’re missing a fun place. It’s a delightful wine bar with wines from all over the world. You can taste a wine or make a case of your own…or both!
I hope you’ll make plans to stop in for a glass of vino on Tuesday, April 14th. You’ll meet Lisa and hear about her fascinating journey to help the widows and orphans in Rwanda. They are refugees from the 1994 genocide and the civil wars that followed. For more information on True Vineyard Ministries, check out their website at http://www.truevineyard.org/. Create Your Heaven On Earth
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, March 29, 2009
What is it that truly gives you joy? To me, there’s a difference between ‘joy’ and ‘pleasure’. Pleasure comes from a great meal, a wonderful wine, a good movie, a fun find for your closet perhaps; but joy, that’s something different. For me, joy doesn’t come from ‘things’, it comes from within. I love to walk in the mornings when the weather is nice (like it was today). I enjoy my IPod, but I take great joy in turning it down and really hearing mother nature. There are so many different bird ‘tunes’ when you start listening. How beautiful their ‘conversation’ is. It takes me away from the demands, deadlines and stresses of all our every day lives. What a beautiful creation our earth and all its creatures are! Maybe they are our glance into the heavens above.

The Perfect Way to Wrap-up April 15
Posted by Tanji on Saturday, March 21, 2009
Sure it’s ‘tax day’ but it doesn’t have to be depressing—spend the evening tasting wines. If you are interested in wine you already know about the wonderful New World Wine and Food Festival in San Antonio every November. What you may not know is that the NWWFF also sponsors numerous wine events throughout the year, and they’re always wonderful. There’s a new event on their agenda coming up April 15, and it features more than 40 wine producers from the Paso Robles region of California (between San Francisco and Los Angeles along the central coast). It’s $40 a person and will be at the Pearl Stables. For more information contact the NWWFF office at 210-822-9555.

Silo Rumor
Posted by Tanji on Monday, February 02, 2009 1 Comments
Silo fans, no worries! I’m assured by owner Patrick Richardson that the rumor flying around about the 1604 location closing isn’t true.
Richardson believes the rumor was started by a competitor in the area – the 1604 corridor between I-10 and 281 which is now loaded with restaurants. Just last month Cafe Paladar closed as did Reggiano’s, both located nearby. So, yes, those amazing fried oysters and that delicious lobster and shrimp sandwich will still be available at BOTH locations.

Valentine's Day Idea

If you’re looking for an easy romantic getaway or just a night out, check out the Valentine’s specials at the Westin La Cantera.
Francesca’s (beautiful sunset view and all) will offer a five ( 5 ) course menu for $ 85.00 \ $125.00 with wine pairing.
The Grille (the steakhouse) will offer a four ( 4 ) course menu for $55.00 / $75.00 with Wine pairing.
And Brannon’s will offer a three ( 3 ) course menu for $27.50.
I would suggest the wine pairing option if you’re interested in wine. Steven Krueger, the sommelier at the resort, is very good. When you dine there, don’t hesitate to ask your server about wine choices. All of them have received wine education and would love to help you make a selection.

Diet - Week Two
Posted by Tanji on Monday, January 19, 2009
Okay, I think we’re gonna like this. As I told you last week, Mike and I started the Atkins diet-basically no carbs of any kind the first two weeks and then limited carbs after that. The first two weeks were a bit rocky, but now we’re starting to see results. I usually try to stay away from carbs in general which is usually pretty easy to do as a lifestyle kind of thing. What makes this a bit challenging for me is that I HATE the word diet…
What Diet?
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, January 11, 2009
Let me just say I absolutely hate to diet! I rarely do it because I think diets actually make me gain weight. I start craving foods I don’t even like when I’m on a diet. HOWEVER, I’ve found one over the years that I think is great!
Sad Restaurant Closing...

I have always been a fan of Cafe Paladar. Chef Brian West and his darling wife Mary Ester are incredibly talented…the food always outstanding. So when I received the email announcing they were closing their charming restaurant, I was saddened. The reason, they said, was the economy and too much competition along the 1604 corridor.

Fabulous New NSide Restaurant

Brasserie Pavil makes a statement! Seriously good food, seriously great decor and serious staying power! The beautiful, spacious restaurant is located behind Wild Fish off Huebner and 1604. If you’ve ever been to a Paris brasserie, let the memories begin. The decor is wonderful. From the massive mahogany bar with beautiful brass accoutrements to the dramatic 20 foot ceilings and colorful tile floor, Brasserie Pavil is a sight to behold. But it’s not just about the ‘decor’ – the food is wonderful. The grilled calamari salad was a meal all by itself – tender, spiced calarmari with french green beans and razor thin beets. I LOVED it. The perfectly seared scallops with asparagus were also DELICIOUS. Pommes Frites (french fries) accompany a lot of the entrees, and they are wonderful – thin, crispy and served with a decadent aioli.
The Experts Chime In on Favorites
Posted by Tanji on Saturday, December 13, 2008
When I look for info from the local experts on wine, I often turn to Janet Easterling and Joe Baker. Both are sommeliers, and both are incredible wine connoisseurs.
Janet is currently a wine consultant to a number of upscale San Antonio restaurants. She also can be found at Bergheim Cellars on Hwy 46, so if you are out that way and need help choosing a wine, you’ll be in expert hands.
One of the most enlightening and educational wine trips I’ve ever taken was with Joe Baker. He’s the Wine Director for Gabriel’s Holdings (Gabriel’s, Don’s & Ben’s, Seazar’s). We traveled with Joe to the Burgundy and Champagne regions in France where we visited dozens of producers. Barrel tastings are the norm in France, and I’m ashamed to admit that we actually had to ‘spit’ while sampling some incredible Montrachets and Champagnes. To give you an idea of what a gifted ‘nose’ Joe has, we were invited to have lunch with legendary wine maker Jacques Lardierre at Louis Jadot. They served us a multi-course meal with different wines paired with each course. The host kept the wine covered to see if Joe could tell him what it was. These were older vintages..wines dating back to the 60’s and 70’s. Joe not only named the wines but also the year of the vintage! He’s truly gifted.

Okay, this has nothing to do with food and wine, but it does have a lot to do with good taste in TV! Tonight, was the last night of Boston Legal on ABC. Talk about a LOSS of good taste for millions of TV viewers. I never thought about Boston Legal in terms of the ‘age’ of its actors until Express-News columnist Jeanne Jakle brought it up during a recent discussion. Candice Bergen, James Spader, William Shatner are all over 45. When I watch Boston Legal I’m impressed with the topics they tackle. Even if I sometimes disagree with the position they take, their arguments are thought provoking and worthy of consideration. And what about the clever writing, incredible acting (SPADER ROCKS!), and who doesn’t love Shatner! So sadly, Boston Legal will go. In its place probably a half-baked reality show which is much cheaper to produce. USA Today recently asked the stars of the show what was the biggest mistake the show made…in other words, why was it cancelled. Candice Bergen’s reply was probably right on the money…Bergen: “Being overly intelligent, too much range, of taking on everyone. I think the network would say we were guilty of being too smart, having too much content — more than people could even digest.” Whatever the reason, it’s our loss as TV viewers.
Latest News on My TV Project
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, December 07, 2008
In case you haven’t heard, Goodtaste With Tanji is headed towards TV. Express News Columnist Jeanne Jakle did a great job of breaking the good news, so I’ve included her recent column below. I am thrilled to be working with the pros at KLRN and am looking forward to showcasing a lot of the great food and fun places we have in San Antonio to the rest of the nation. As Jeanne mentions in the column, the next step in the process is securing the underwriters/advertisers for the project. In traveling to wine regions here and around the world, Mike and I have met some incredible families who inspired us to pursue our passion for learning more about wine, food and cultures in other countries. I cannot wait to bring their stories to you! I’ll keep you posted on our progress.
Web Posted: 12/05/2008 12:00 CST Jeanne Jakle: Patton TV show heads toward PBS
Jeanne Jakle – Jeanne Jakle
Former newscaster Tanji Patton is returning to television, and if all goes as planned, the S.A. blonde with the infectious smile won’t be seen just locally, but will grace TV screens across the country.
PBS station KLRN has given the ex-WOAI anchorwoman the go-ahead for her dream show — a half-hour devoted to wine, food and travel — to be distributed to PBS stations across the country. Target date for the premiere of “Goodtaste with Tanji”? Early 2010, she said.
“It’s an incredible opportunity,” Patton said after learning her show had been green-lighted after talks with S.A.’s public station and a presentation DVD. “So many people approach PBS with projects, and I feel honored KLRN has the confidence in me to help make this happen.”
Patton, however, has a hard road ahead before she can start shooting the 13 shows promised. As she and her husband, Mike Patton, own the show, it’s up to them to find underwriters to finance it. It won’t be cheap; the budget not only includes production costs, but also lots of domestic and international travel — to wineries, homes, restaurants, etc.
She’s still working to finish the pilot with the aid of Shootz Productions here. However, she already has an impressively packaged presentation book — full of information on herself, her show, research on audience demographics and consumers — to present to potential sponsors.
Charles Vaughn, KLRN’s vice president of telecommunications, said he’s excited to work with Patton on launching a program with such variety. KLRN is offering the station’s production services to Patton and will provide the platform to present the show to PBS affiliates across the country.
“If it had been just another slice-and-dice cooking show, we probably would have passed. That’s such a crowded field,” Vaughn said. “But hers is a nice mix of wine, travel, food and lifestyle.”
He also loves the fact that, as host, Patton’s so comfortable with the camera and has a warm way of relating to people.
People, added Patton, are at the heart of her project. Her goal is to make an “emotional connection” to the viewer and to the people she interviews for the show.
Though it will include information on luxurious travel and culinary delights, “Goodtaste” won’t be just geared to “the highfalutin,” she said. It will have a “best buy” segment, for instance, that

While we all would prefer a better economy, there’s always a silver lining to every cloud. Word is wine discounts will be BIG this holiday season. Producers and distributors have a lot of wine to sell. New vintages are being released, and inventories need to be moved. I was at the new HEB Plus on 281 and Evers road (incredible store) and couldn’t help but notice how many wines are on sale. In some cases $2 and $3 dollar discounts per bottle. And, keep in mind, when you buy 6 at HEB or Central market you get an additional 10% discount. Keep an eye out where you shop for wine!

Butterball has some great ideas on making your turkey look as good as it tastes. Afterall, presentation is everything right!
Try using fresh sage leaves and curly parsley around a turkey stuffed with dressing if sage is in your dressing. You can also add some colorful vegetables and fruits to the platter like cranberries, lemons, oranges to brighten the color or even brussel sprouts and pearl onions to add warmth. The more colorful- the more dramatic the presentation!

Head out to the Rim shopping area to try Maggiano’s Little Italy-the newest restaurant to open here in SA. Mike and I have been fans of Maggiano’s for years. We always enjoy their Las Vegas location and the Houston restaurant in the Galleria area. The bruschetta is very good, but my favorite has to be the crab cake sandwich…it’s so rich and full of flavor, and their parmesan potato chips are wonderful. Don’t overlook the salads-generous servings and always fresh. For reservations or more information call 210-451-6000 .

The Ultimate Honor System

While researching story ideas out in northern California, we fell in love with the incredible organic produce. We make every Farmer’s Market we can out here and cook freshly picked produce each night.
We stumbled upon the coolest ‘tomato stand’ in Sonoma. Look at the sign closely – noone was manning the booth – you weigh your choices on the scale, calculate what you owe and drop it in the box! And I might add, the tomatoes were incredible. We bought heirlooms and made the Mondavi Panzanella Tomato Salad recipe that’s in my recipes section. It was incredible. The secret to that salad is after you toast your bread and cut it into small chunks, soak it for a minute or two in red wine right before you add it to the salad. If your tomatoes are juicy and ripe, make lots of salad…it’s so good.

Only in California - B-B-Q'd Oysters & Rolls Royce
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, October 26, 2008
We’ve been exploring the Mendocino wine region and drove down along Hwy 1 to Tomales Bay, an area known for fresh oysters. The oysters, btw, were amazing. Several different varieties raw or bar-b-q’d on the half shell. But the real show was when we walked outside.
Check out the row of cars parked out front. There were 10 brand new Rolls Royce sedans! We had a lot of fun looking inside each and every one. The Rolls dealer came out to tell us all about them and said that we were looking at about $6 million dollars worth of cars. Yikes!

New Restaurant to Try
Posted by Tanji on Saturday, October 11, 2008
Another new restaurant in the Stone Oak area for you to try called Tresca’s. It’s located in The Plaza at Concord Park on Sonterra Blvd. I’m a huge fan of it’s owner – Dan Ward from Piatti’s and Luca. Dan’s warm management style not only attracts top staff but also loyal customers. I recently met a friend there for a glass of wine. The decor is stylish, contemporary and inviting. The bar area is nice and roomy complete with a flat screen TV. If you enjoy exploring and tasting different wines, you’ll love the way Dan did the wine list. You can try a ‘splash’, a glass or a carafe. The food is similar in style to Piatti and Luca, contemporary Italian. We didn’t have dinner but Dan insisted we try one of the pizzas…an interesting addition to this one – eggs on top. It may sound strange but it was VERY good! I look forward to going back for dinner.
Vela...A New Wine Bar
Posted by Tanji on Thursday, October 02, 2008
There’s a new wine bar in town, and it’s located next to a very popular restaurant—Paloma Blanca’s. “Vela” is the new kid on the block. I got a sneak peak this week, and you’ll want to check it out. It’s contemporary, cozy and has a nice selection of wines and a wonderful cheese plate. Also, if you’re in an adventurous mood, check out their sparkling wine in a can that comes with a straw! It’s a glass-size serving in a pop-top can. If you like your sparkling on the sweet side, you’ll enjoy it. If you’re REALLY in a celebratory mode, Cristal is on the menu! Vela is set to open this weekend. Their phone number is 210-822-7120.
Napa at Crush
Posted by Tanji on Saturday, September 27, 2008

It’s busy, incredibly crowded but a lot of fun. Anxiety, excitement and a wonderful rich grape aroma fill the air as wine makers all over the valley begin the mammoth task of harvesting their grapes. What a fun time to be in wine country! When you go, you’ll see that it’s a scientific process that’s also part experience and gut intuition when it comes to deciding the perfect day to cut the fruit from the vine. We took a tour at Flora Springs winery into the vineyard to check out the plump little grapes and got a quick lesson on how vintners decide the grapes are ready. Check out the picture here of Richard Tiedemann, with Flora Springs, reading the amount of sugar inside one of the grapes. He squeezed the grape juice onto an ocular device that measured the sugar level. When that level gets to the desired amount (all winemakers have their own preferences), it’s time to get the fruit off of the vine…something that’s often done before sunrise. Then the wine making process begins and months and months of monitoring, measuring and adjusting the juice to get everything just right.

It’s a beautiful time to be in Napa when the grapes are fully ripe hanging from the vines. The weather is spectacular, restaurants are bustling and talk everywhere is about the harvest and what to expect from the grapes. There’s a frenetic energy in the air. Because of the climate differences, soil changes, unpredicted pests, all kinds of things, every vintage is different, so each year’s finished product is always the big unknown. Some of the wine makers we talked to were not only anxious about the harvest but also wine affionado Robert Parker’s visit to their wineries next month. A good review from Parker is money in the bank!
Explore Hill Country With New Book
Posted by Tanji on Monday, September 15, 2008
I recently received an advance copy of “The Texas Hill Country” A Food and Wine Lover’s Paradise and have already put it to good use. The attractive cover (a beautiful, lush grapevine) and easy to follow format got my attention. Before I knew it, I’d committed a good 15 minutes to exploring the recipes and enjoying the brief descriptions of the colorful Hill Country destinations. Being a native Texan I recognized a lot of the featured places, but there were also some nice surprises. The description of The Cypress Grille in Boerne was so enticing I called my parents and suggested it as a meeting place for brunch on Sunday to celebrate my dad’s birthday. WOW…it was fantastic! I look forward to going back for dinner and exploring their wine list.
The Cypress Grill is just one of the many ‘gems’ featured in “The Texas Hill Country”. Aren’t we lucky to live here! The fun book goes on sale October 8. Contact your favorite book seller for more info. Enjoy!
Coco Rocks!
Posted by Tanji on Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Fun, feminine and fantastically French—I love Coco’s! What a nice new addition to our restaurant scene—fresh, innovative and fabulous! Creator and owner Philippe Place has a winner. The décor has a Moulin-Rouge appeal…lots of crystal chandeliers, plush red velvet (tasty not tacky) plenty of warm, welcoming wood tones. And then there’s the food AND the chocolate martinis. We’ve been several times and have never been disappointed. Our favorites so far – the chocolate risotto, the escargots (best I’ve had in S.A.), the rack of lamb served on creamy polenta, the Ahi Tuna Au Poivre and the salmon that’s served with an amazing red beet risotto.
But save room for dessert . The white chocolate cheesecake is laced with caramel and then topped with a passion fruit and cayenne pepper sauce—delicious. It is incredibly light yet still sinfully good. If you love chocolate (how can you not) try the Chocolate Passport Port—one whiff of the wine and you’ll be overwhelmed with its cocoa aroma—it’s dessert in a glass.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about their chocolate martinis. They have plenty to choose from, and you’ll want to try them all…probably not at the same time. Be sure and sample the chocolate macaroon…creamy chocolate laced with grated coconut.
The menu has plenty of choices and is well priced. Philippe knows his wines, so ask him for a suggestion when you go there. Besides, his charming French accent will convince you that you’re really sitting in a French bistro along the Seine…if only!
This is a great place to meet friends for drinks or spend hours over a delightful dinner. Enjoy!
Wonderful New Italian Restaurant
Posted by Tanji on Saturday, August 30, 2008
Okay…you can believe all the good things you hear about Jason Dady’s new Tuscan restaurant “Tre Trattoria”!
We had dinner there this weekend with three other couples and had a wonderful meal. It’s different, and that’s a good thing! The food comes out family-style, so everyone gets to try a variety of dishes. We started with the marinated octopus salad with shaved fennel and a grilled radiccio salad…both delightful. Then the pasta course, linguini with chantrelles and a spicy Spaghetti All’Amatriciana. Our entres were a perfectly grilled trout and a grilled swordfish with capers…all delicious. For a wine to go with, we chose the super Tuscan called Crognolo Toscana Tenuta Sette Ponti and liked it so much we ordered a second bottle. For dessert try the Huckleberry Milkshake. It’s scrumptous and a treat to get real huckleberries in San Antonio. Tre Trattoria is located at 4003 Broadway near the Witte museum.
Your Favorite Restaurant
Posted by Tanji on Sunday, August 17, 2008
I get asked that question all the time! That’s a tough one to answer. I don’t have a single favorite restaurant. It goes without saying that all the restaurants featured on my site fall into that category—I asked Morton’s, Paloma Blanca’s and Luciano’s to be on the website here because I am a big fan of their restaurants.
A Good Time to Get to Know Wine
Posted by Tanji on Tuesday, August 05, 2008 2 Comments
I think most wine experts would agree that it would be practically impossible to learn everything there is to know about wine. The more I learn the more I realize how much more there is to learn.
Mike and I have taken a variety of courses, read a number of books and still the pursuit to know more is in full throttle. One of the best instructors we’ve ever had just happens to live in San Antonio.
Rosé Wines - All the Buzz

What comes to mind when you hear “rosé wine?” White zinfandel? Sweet wine? Well, then you’ve gotta get more adventurous! There are some really nice, dry rosé wines that aren’t white zinfandels, and they are perfect for our hot summer days. Plus, they pair nicely with a lot of different foods.
The beginning

Where to begin—gratitude seems appropriate. It was a summer vacation with my husband two years ago that sparked our desire to pursue a career… a lifestyle… that wasn’t all about somebody’s else’s bottom line. We wanted to make a living doing something together that encompassed our interest in travel, wine and food.
