Gott's Roadside - Best Burgers in Napa
Posted on Sunday, August 15, 2010
What’s the best hamburger you’ve ever had? In our neck of the woods I have two favorites – the ‘crack’ burger at Zinc on the Riverwalk, as locals call it because it’s so deliciously addictive, and the blue cheese burger out at the Alamo Springs Café near Comfort.
I’ve got a new entry to throw into the mix… and the fun part about this burger is its location…Napa. Gott’s Roadside is right in the heart of wine country on the famed Hwy 29. Gott’s hamburgers have attracted a cult following – you’ve probably seen them on numerous Food Network shows or read about them in food magazines. These burgers are really good…wait till you see how they’re made.

The BEST tasting steak
Posted on Sunday, August 09, 2009
If you truly love steak, you should try the Akaushi beef.
Now is a great time because it’s on SALE…up to 30% off. This special breed is highly regulated and prized in Japan. Today, Akaushi genetics are controlled by a group of Texans under the name HeartBrand Beef, Inc.
These steaks are said to be healthier than most red meat because of their unique fatty acid composition. Whatever the reason, the Akaushi meat is incredibly tender, juicy and almost has a buttery flavor.
It is sold in a couple of SA’s finer steak houses, but you can buy it for YOUR house at Bolner’s Meat Market on 2900 S. Flores. For info call 210-533-5112. I’m sold!

Two Good Things That Are Good For You

If you got chocolate, dark chocolate, for Valentine’s Day I’ve got some fun ideas for pairing it with some red wines not champagne. Champagne pairs nicely with white or milk chocolate, but stick to the reds when it comes to dark chocolate. More and more research is showing that not only is red wine (in moderation) good for you, but so is dark chocolate. I’ve got more details for you in my Tanjents.

5 Easy Steps to ‘Taste’ Wine
Posted on Sunday, January 25, 2009
The thing I love about wine is that the more you know, the more you want to know. Joe Baker, (one of the most gifted sommeliers I’ve ever met) who works at Seazars on N. New Braunfels, first peaked our interest in wine and there’s been no going back. One thing that does make a difference in really experiencing the wine is tasting the wine. The pros over at the Westin La Cantera have a step by step lesson…

I first met Diana Barrios when I was hosting the Living show some years back.
She was a frequent and very popular guest (she still appears with Shelly)! I even had the pleasure of having her beautiful mother Viola on as a guest. All of us were stunned and saddened beyond belief when Viola was murdered this fall. She touched the lives of so many. Her beautiful spirit and generosity certainly live on through her children and their families.

There are more good value wines than ever these days, but here are five I think you’ll like. If you want to ‘dig deeper’, click on Tanjents where you’ll find more recommendations from two expert sommelier friends of mine. Also, click on HEB to your right for more bargain champagnes.
Apparently, we’re not the only ones that think Kendall Jackson’s Chardonnay is a good buy. A recent story in People Magazine profiling the
family life of President-elect Barack Obama
mentioned that a bottle of Kendall-Jackson chardonnay sat on the
Obamas’ kitchen countertop. So, after hearing about that, the
California winemaker recently sent a few congratulatory cases of the brand to the
incoming President for his new wine cellar on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Beyond Napa There's Mendocino
Posted on Sunday, November 09, 2008
Fall is a beautiful time to explore California wine country. We recently spent some time in the Mendocino area – if you’ve already done Napa and Sonoma, head a bit north to Mendocino. The cooler climate produces some wonderful Pinot Noirs and Gerwerstraminer wines.
Also, as in the case in a lot of Northern California, organic farming is how they grow their grapes. In fact, one of the ‘best buys’ below, Parducci, calls itself the first carbon neutral winery in the U.S.
White Oak Wines
Posted on Sunday, November 02, 2008
There’s a wine on the shelves at HEB and other places that you’ll want to look for. It’s called White Oak… no relation to the famous Silver Oak… but easy to remember.
If you dine in a fine restaurant or stay in a luxury hotel, like the Four Seasons, the wines served by the glass are likely White Oak wines.
The winemaker tells me they’re a great value – wines true to their varietals, grapes grown in the perfect climates and a price point you can’t beat.

Back to Nature at Benziger Winery
Posted on Monday, October 20, 2008
I recently spent an afternoon with Chris Benziger touring his family’s beautiful vineyards. The Benzigers are not only farming their grapes organically but also biodynamically. The entire property is full of life from the croaking toads we came up on to the beautiful hummingbirds that literally danced right above our heads.
Now, when I have a glass of Benzigers’ wine I picture that beautiful ranch, remember the delightful sounds of nature and truly enjoy and appreciate each and every sip.
Mondavi Crush
Posted on Sunday, October 12, 2008
What a fun weekend! Rob and Lydia Mondavi recently invited me to their ‘Crush for Beauty’ event in Napa. It’s a big day because Rob harvests the cabernet grapes from his Osso vineyards for his wine, and Lydia uses everything but the grape juice for her 29 Cosmetics. Turns out those grape seeds may pack a powerful punch… they contain anti-oxidants that work to make your skin look younger. You can find 29 Cosmetics exclusively at Neiman Marcus stores.

Coco’s Bistro & Lounge
Posted on Sunday, September 14, 2008
Fun, feminine and fantastically French—I love Coco’s! What a nice new addition to our restaurant scene—fresh, innovative and fabulous! Creator, Philippe Place, has a winner. The décor has a Moulin-Rouge appeal… lots of crystal chandeliers, plush red velvet (tasty not tacky) lots of warm, welcoming wood tones. And then there’s the food and the chocolate martinis. We’ve been several times and have never been disappointed. I’ve got more information on the menu in my blog, Tangents.

Wine Bars
Posted on Sunday, August 17, 2008
Wine bars are becoming more and more popular. They’re a great place to sample a variety of different wines. You’ll also discover some good food and meet some fun people!

More to Mondavi Than Wine
Posted on Sunday, August 10, 2008
The entire wine world was saddened this spring by the passing of Robert Mondavi. He was a visionary…a passionate, innovative entreprenuer who created the most famous winery in California. That winery sold in 2004 but his family continues to embrace the Mondavi passion.
His son Michael’s family is carrying on the wine making tradition at Folio Winemakers’ Studio…a tasting room you’ll want to visit when you travel to Napa.
Mike and I recently had the pleasure of meeting Rob Mondavi and his wife Lydia—Rob is involved in making the wines for Folio and Lydia has designed an entire cosmetics line that contains the antioxidant properties found in the grape…products designed to make your skin look younger.
You can find Lydia’s cosmetics at Neiman Marcus stores….I’ve got a link below.
